Maria Feodorovna (née Dagmar of Denmark; 1847 – 1928) was the wife of Alexander III and Empress of Russia from 1881 to 1894.[1] She was the sister of Alexandra of Denmark and, through her, the sister-in-law to Edward VII.[2]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Dagmar was engaged to tsesarevich Nicholas, but he fell ill and passed in 1865, before they could marry,[2] with his final wish being that she marry his younger brother.[1] The pair quickly became engaged and married in 1866, with Edward VII and Alexandra attending.[2] Maria bore Alexander five children that survived infancy: Nicholas, George, Xenia, Michael, and Olga.[1]

On 29 October 1888,[3] Maria was onboard the imperial train en route to Saint Petersburg from a family retreat in Crimea. The family's cart was disturbed by the Assassin Nikolai Orelov, who was on a mission to kill her husband. Maria held her youngest daughter as they looked on in fear, before Alexander came back into their cart and confronted the Assassin. During the resulting scuffle, the train derailed, but the royal family was miraculously unharmed.[4]
