Gratian
Gratian (359 – 383), born Flavius Gratianus was Western Roman Emperor from 367 to 383.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 378, Gratian suffered a defeat at the Battle of Adrianople against the Goths. The Roman general Magnus Maximus, in an attempt to ursurp and eliminate Gratian, wrote a letter and invited the Roman Emperor to join him in Lugdunum on the guise of conquering Thrace.[1] In 383, Maximus revolted and eventually had Gratian killed, taking the throne for himself.[2]
Prior to his death, Gratian owned a villa in what is now Cambridgeshire in the Roman province of Britannia. It was later left to ruins following the evacuation of the Roman troops in the 5th century, with Maximus' letter to him left behind.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
In 873, Gratian's ruined villa was visited by the Viking Eivor while on her way to rescue Birna, an associate of Soma.[3]
