Charybdis

Charybdis was a monstrous creature in the Greek mythology, said to haunt a narrow channel with Skylla on the other side of it.

Influence

During the Peloponnesian War, when the misthios Kassandra sailed the Adrestia past Keos and the other Pirate Islands, her first mate Barnabas warned her to be cautious in the area. The historian Herodotos, knowing Barnabas' affinity for myths, made a joking comment about whether Charybdis or Skylla waited at the sea floor, but Barnabas corrected him, saying that the reason for care was because of the pirates who patrolled the area.

Trivia

• To be "between Scylla and Charybdis" is an idiom akin to "between a rock and a hard place."
• A cosmetic pack for the Adrestia can be bought from the Helix Store called the Charybdis & Skylla Naval Pack, featuring Skylla as the figurehead and on the sail.
• Skylla and Charybdis are both featured in Homer's Odyssey.
