Template:Reflist can easily be converted to include columns, which would, cut down the vertical length of that section by at least half (if not a third, for three columns). With regards to it being "needless", that depends on your point of view. Clearly at least two individuals (Sima and myself) feel it is needed, since the current method just isn't up to scratch any more.

Users are, of course, welcome to refuse to redo the referencing on our existing articles, focusing instead on updating the information on our articles, but need to remember that if and when this proposal goes through, any future changes will have to comply.

EDIT: I see that Template:Reflist already has this facility, so there's no need for any further changes there.
