Varin's Axe

Varin's Axe was a bearded axe which belonged to Varin, the father of the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir.

History[edit | edit source]

The axe was forged some time in the mid-9th century by the blacksmith Gunnar in Heillboer.[1] In 855 CE, the Order of the Ancients member Kjotve the Cruel used it to execute Varin during a raid on the Raven Clan in Rygjafylke.[2] It stayed in his possession as a trophy until 872, when Eivor recovered it after she defeated Kjotve's clansmen Rikiwulf before he could kill her crewmate Bragi in a blood-sacrifice.[3] Eivor held onto it when she joined members of the Raven Clan in leaving Norway for better prospects in England.[4] There, she found sufficient funds and resources to upgrade the axe to different tiers, increasing its attack and lethality against opponents while also displaying finer craftsmanship.[5]

Eivor's father's axe. A fine weapon that should have been soaked in blood, not laid aside.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The digital model for Varin's Axe, Eivor's starting weapon in the 2020 video game Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, would later be reused for two weapons in a patch for the 2018 mobile game Assassin's Creed: Rebellion, with the Superior tier being used for Shieldbreaker and the Flawless tier used for Wurmsbreath.

0n 12 February 2021, Valhalla's Lead Writer Alain Mercieca revealed that a mini-model of Varin's Axe at its Superior tier was made during production, joking that Eivor's male actor Magnus Bruun had so many troubles handling the life-size prop during mocap he was forced to use the mini, which the post-production team then blew up 500 times for the game files.[6]
