The strigolniki (Russian: стригольники) were followers of a Russian religious sect which appeared in the mid-14th century, gained a great number of followers, becoming one of the major sects in medieval Russia before disappearing by the early 15th century due to persecution.[1]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

In 1503, a team of Assassins sent to Moscow by Ezio Auditore[2] from the Italian Brotherhood of Assassins allied themselves with Ridolfo Fioravant and worked together in order to prevent Ivan III from discovering the existence of the Brotherhood. In order to do this, they posed as members of the Strigolniki Sect,[2][3][4] with Fioravant having created personas, signatures, and communications which were then distributed by the Assassins. Guards were sent on a wild goose chase, storming abandoned buildings and putting up arrest posters for people that did not exist, while paranoia in the city increased. The Assassins also dealt with Ivan's top agents, leaving the bodies hanging from church beams with the strigolniki symbol carved into the floorboards beneath them,[3] effectively ending Ivan's investigation into the Brotherhood.[2][3][4]
