Buckman Tavern was a tavern in Lexington, United States. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In 1775, the night before the battle at Lexington, the town's militia headed by John Parker met on the Lexington common to wait for the British Army, though they eventually moved into Buckman Tavern, by then already a popular stop after training exercises. The bar owners promised free beer to encourage the militia members to show up and just before the dawn of 17 April, the soldiers went back to the common,[2] where they would confront John Pitcairn's troops.[3] Some accounts credit the first shot coming from "the corner of a house to the right of the church", i.e., Buckman Tavern.[2]
