The captain's final moments

A Templar (died 1776) captained a Man O' War for the Royal Navy during the American Revolutionary War.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1776, the captain was contacted by fellow Templar Nicholas Biddle to attack the French Navy ship La Belladonna when it was on its way to discreetly transport a supply of weapons and gunpowder to the Continental Army.[1] This was one of several operations that perplexed the Colonial Assassins Ratonhnhaké:ton and Robert Faulkner because Biddle was himself a captain of the Continental Navy.[2]

Biddle, sailing Randolph, pretended to be La Belladonna's escort before suddenly abandoning her in the open waters to be preyed on by the Royal Navy. His British Templar ally followed his lead with a flotilla of frigates and sloops-of-war to ambush La Belladonna, but he arrived moments after the Aquila captained by Ratonhnhaké:ton came onto the scene to defend the French.[1] Despite managing to disable La Belladonna, the captain was beaten in naval combat by the Aquila. His Man O' War was subsequently crippled by chain shots then boarded by Ratonhnhaké:ton's crew, as the Assassin was keen on interrogating him.[1]

The captain fled through his ship until he was forced to make a stand on the quarterdeck, whereupon he was dealt a fatal blow by the Assassin. As he lay dying, he revealed that he was not operating under British orders and mused that his Assassin adversary already knew his real allegiance, upon which Ratonhnhaké:ton identified the Templar ring on his finger.[1]
