A hippodrome (Greek: ἱππόδρομος) is a type of ancient Greek arena designed specifically for the racing of horses and chariots.

History

With the introduction of the Olympic Games, hippodromes were used to host many chariot-racing events, the most notable being the Hippodrome at the Sanctuary of Olympia in Elis, Greece.

In 48 BCE, the Lageion Hippodrome in Alexandria, Egypt, served as the home to several chariot-racing teams, including the Prasina Green and the Veneta Blue. The city of Constantinople also had a hippodrome, but as it was built according to Roman ideas, it was more of a circus.
