Ancaster (Old English: Anecastre) is a town and civil parish in Lincolnshire, England. Originating as a fortified settlement established by the Romans, the town served as the last stand of the Bishop of Lincolnshire Herefrith, secretly a member of the Order of the Ancients.
Circa 875, after publicly announcing his membership within the Order, Herefrith held up at the fort with his remaining loyal guards, seeking to make a last stand. Learning of his treachery of the shire, a fyrd organized by noblemen Hunwald, Aelfgar and the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir assaulted the stronghold. Eivor herself entered the monastery where Herefrith had hid in and assassinated him, ending his terror over the shire.[1]
