Agaunum was a Roman outpost in Switzerland, now the town of Saint-Maurice.[1] Among its landmarks is the Abbey of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune.[2]
History[edit | edit source]
In 286, the outpost was the site of the deaths of the Theban Legion, a group of 6,666 men recently converted to Christianity. Their martyrdom caused Agaunum to be considered hallowed ground in Christian tradition and many of the men in the Legion were later revered as saints, as was the case of their leader, Saint Maurice. Agaunum was written about in Saint Maurice's hagiography, was featured in one of Eucherius' letters, and was included in the 6th century accounts by Gregory of Tours, where he also spoke of a cult dedicated to the Legion.[3]
