Kalibos was a Spartan strategos during the Peloponnesian War who lived with his wife Zeuxo in the village of Geronthai during the latter 5th century BCE.

Biography[edit | edit source]

During his service as a general, Kalibos once had an incident where he and his men were fooled by Athenians employing a mock Trojan Horse strategem despite being well-acquainted with the legend of the Trojan War. The unit he commanded was stationed by a beach near the Fort of Praisai in Lakonia when one day, his wife Zeuxo hired the Spartan misthios Kassandra the Eagle Bearer to deliver wine she had prepared for him and his troops. He and his men jubilantly indulged themselves through the night and woke up hungover the next morning to see a wooden horse outside their encampment. Echoing the Trojans, Kalibos cheerfully suggested that they offer it to "Poseidon Earth-Shaker" just before Athenian soldiers broke out from it to ambush them. With Kassandra's help, Kalibos and his troops were able to defeat the raid.[1]
