Cougar

Cougars (Puma concolor) are large, predatory cats found in North and South America.
History[edit | edit source]
During the 9th century, some bandit groups in England kept cougars locked up in cages. The Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir encountered cougars during her travels in Lunden, Tonnastadir, and Vinland.[1]
In the 18th century, when the Kanien'kehá:ka Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton learned a cougar was attacking children performing rite-of-passage ceremonies in the valley outside his village, he successfully hunted and killed the animal.[2] In 1773, a white cougar began prowling the Davenport Homestead. Ratonhnhaké:ton and Myriam tracked the animal, causing it to flee into Norris' mine. Ratonhnhaké:ton entered the mine to draw out the animal, and Myriam shot and killed it before it could pounce and harm Norris.[3]
