In AC1, Lucy leaves you her access pen and you can pickpocket Vidic's access pen later on. Using those, you can read the emails on the computers.
One email says that they had a Piece of Eden, but it was destroyed, which is what they need the map at the end of AC1 for, to locate and secure another.
