"Is nothing sacred? Ancient and valuable relics were housed in this temple. Now the scum has taken it all and burned it down."
―Augeia on the burning of the temple of the Charities, 420s BCE[src]-[m]

Augeia was a Greek woman who lived in Orchomenos in Boeotia during the 5th century BCE.

Biography

During the Peloponnesian War, the sacred temple dedicated to the Charites in the city was burned down by an individual seeking a stele dating back to the Mycenaean period. Disgusted, Augeia visited the burned temple to investigate the burning in an attempt to track down the arsonist. There, she met the misthios Kassandra, who was in pursue of the stele. Augeia directed Kassandra to the beggars' quarter of the city, believing the culprit to be hiding there.[1]
