I've read the novels and believe me, they are worse than anything I've ever encountered. Playing the Game is much much better. I've collected all the Four Novels - Reniassance, Brotherhood, The Secret Crusade and Revelations and believe me, the Games and Embers are much much better when played, rather than read.

If you really like a Novel, then go for "The Fall". That gives the reason why the Assassin's Order is in Shambles, by the time of Desmond
