It's America in the 1700's, then it was nowhere near how it is now. It's awesome since it's the place where civilisation meets wilderness. I'm not very familiar with the british empire and what rights and such people had within it, but as I understand it, America after the revolution was the first real democracy in the modern world and was the first nation to create human rights. And since this is the supposedly the final ac game (it will atleast end the current story arc) it is an ideal setting since it is a turning point in history and the point were society was beginning to move in the direction that it is today.
