Well climbing a tree isn't necessarily a survival skill, unless, you take into account... environmental obstacles... after all, we all live in cities... why would we need to learn how to climb trees? Also, Altair mostly prowled the urban jungles, so coming across a tree was scrace, hence, not needed knowledge.
