When I watched this scene, I was so confused that I just assumed the producers of the movie just rushed this scene in without any thought behind it for the sake of plot.

I thought that the fact Sophia Rikkin and the other Assassins could see Callum interacting with the apparitions shows that it's not the Bleeding Effect because they're not just his own hallucinations.

Therefore, since he was still connected to the Animus, it had to have been from the Animus itself. This particular Animus was projecting these holograms of people and things that Callum was interacting (while they had a screen that showed the scenes in actual detail).

Initially, I thought maybe he was actually reliving the memory of another ancestor who just happened to be interacting with his mother (maybe his father?), but he treated it like it was himself. Then, it appeared that there were other ancestors around him, like Arno.

I considered that perhaps Callum's mother had foreseen that Callum would access his genetic memories and somehow did something similar to what Clay did... somehow... Ultimately, there doesn't seem to be any explanation. :(
