Assassin's Creed is a non-canonical eight-page comic by Michael "Gabe" Krahulik and Jerry "Tycho Brahe" Holkins of Penny Arcade, a website focused on video games and video gaming culture. Originally published online on 1 August 2007,[2] it was included as promotional material in pre-ordered Limited Edition steelboxes of the game Assassin's Creed and follows its protagonist Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad on one of his missions in Acre.

It was reprinted on Ubisoft's official site behind an age gate[3] shortly after 12 October and remained up while the Assassin's Creed series expanded until sometime after February 2014,[4] though it can still be found on Penny Arcade.[2]

Plot

Altaïr enters Acre on a mission from his Mentor Al Mualim. Blending into the crowd of priests and civilians, he soon spots his target, a heavily-built man in a green cloak. Hoping to get a better vantage point from which to strike from above, Altaïr climbs to the rooftops and tracks his target from there, all while the man below remains wary of his surroundings yet unaware of what has changed in the crowd.

Altaïr follows him to a market place, but his target notices the Assassin's presence. Pretending to look at a merchant's oranges in a market stall with an awning that obscures him from Altaïr's sight, he suddenly dashes up a flight of stairs behind the shopkeeper while Altaïr continues waiting on the opposite rooftop for the right time to strike.

Detail panel of the fight

Suddenly, the man startles Altaïr by appearing behind him, insulting his assailant by referring to him as "one of Al Mualim's pups". From there, the two engage in battle. Despite Altaïr's skill, the green-cloaked man holds his own, easily dodging a strike from the Hidden Blade and disarming Altaïr when he tried to grab his target's dagger to use against him.

Whilst fighting, the man goads Altaïr about Al Mualim's intentions, claiming he would slowly take away Altaïr's freedom and eventually kill him once he felt his pupil's usefulness has ended. However, Altaïr then found an opening and elbowed him in the face. With his target dazed, Altaïr backed away and attempted another leaping attack, only to be countered mid-air with a strong uppercut under the chin, sending him flat on the rooftop.

The man pulls Altaïr close and states that Al Mualim does not care for the Levantine Assassins and tries insinuate that Al Mualim could always father more, for the man thought he could see the Mentor's face in his attacker. Altaïr, seeing another opening, headbutts the man in the nose and follows up with a lethal strike from the Hidden Blade to the stomach before the man can recover again.

The words of Altaïr's debriefing with Al Mualim at Masyaf overlay the panels of him delivering last rites to his dead target. Al Mualim asks if Altaïr's target had said anything unusual, but Altaïr simply responds that what he had to offer was "nothing of consequence", to which the Mentor replies that the target had always been "a teller of tales".
