Category changes
Hello Andrewh7, I recognize that you're new and wish to contribute, but categories in our wiki are organized in strict ways, where changing them around can throw off the entire organization. As a result, editors should normally consult with the community first before making substantial changes to them. For example, we have separate categories for "Greek" and "Ethnic Greeks" for a reason. One is for nationality, the other for ethnicity. Many ethnic Greek characters from the Ptolemaic Kingdom would be "nationally" Egyptian but ethnically Greek, and we needed a category to distingusih these from Greek nationals. I recognize that the term "natonality" may be a bit anachronistic depending on the political science theory, but it is a word we're using generally out of need. Please refrain from making further changes to the categories like these. Sol Pacificus(Cyfiero) 20:52, June 8, 2020 (UTC)
The category pages are still quite messy all things considering, but going ahead to start altering the organization on your own volition only exacerbates the problem rather than remedying it. Everyone has to be on the same page about it, and in any case, you would have to manually move hundreds upon hundreds of pages in your reorganization efforts, and that would take days of work.
I've just opened up a discussion on the talk page of the Greek category regarding how I think the many Greek characters in Odyssey were incorrectly placed there. You should provide your input when you have time. However, distinction between ethnicity and a loose nationality categories are absolutely necessary even where there may be many individuals who can fall under both, as there are also many individuals whose ethnicity is not the same as their nationality. For the other redundancy you mentioned, when we last reorganized our category pages, one of our admins notified me that he preferred there to be a specific category tier for each broad category type which serves as a general pool for all relevant pages even if those pages are already in a subcategory. So for example, he identified "individuals" as one of these, and that's why every character is also placed into Category:Individuals even when they already fit into subcategories within that category. To be honest, out of all the points you made, this is the one you were right to call out. Which categories serve as "pools" have never been defined nor codified, nor have we had a community discussion on whether there should be categories that serve as "pools".
If you would like, you can open up a discussion on category organization in the forums. Even if you don't, you have prompted us to revisit this topic anyways. There, you can bring up your suggestions. You can also make a case for having categories on male and female if you really think there is a need for it although currently, I don't see why that is necessary or more efficient at all. In the meantime, please refrain from modifying the categories of pages any further because without a discussion on this, that is just going to be disruptive. Images
Hey there Andrewh7,
I saw that you have recently quite a bit of location images, which is something I greatly appreciate. However, please do note that we have a bunch of policies in regards to images as well. Please ensure that you source them properly, and also, images with watermarks such as the author or Gameplay elements are permitted. So I urge that you read up on the Wiki's policies here. Cheers :) XOdeyssusx (talk) 07:38, June 11, 2020 (UTC)
Hello again Andrew,
I'm just messaging once again to remind you to properly source and remove the watermarks of the images you have uploaded. A suggestion would be for you to upload and source a batch of images for a particular article (e.g. the ones you uploaded for Aaru, Heb Sed etc) so that it makes it easier. Otherwise, as you continue to upload, the past uploaded images may be forgotten and remained unsourced. Apologise to keep reminding on this, but it is a policy of our wiki. :x
P.S. I did managed to source and removed the watermarks for some of the images you uploaded, so if you can, do help out with the rest perhaps.
