In 921, Ahmad ibn Fadlan travelled form Baghdad to central Russia where he met a mysterious Northern people. He was the first Muslim scholar to make an account of their strange habit of burning their dead kings with their ships.

Al-Khawarizmi was a House of Wisdom mathematician best known for giving his name to the notion of "algorithm", his work on algebra (al-jabr), and his diffusion of the Arabic-Indian Numeral system.

The Abbasids were descendants of al-Abbas, the uncle of Prophet Muhammad. This lineage (and their military might) helped them serve as Caliphs, or Muhammad's successors, from 750 to 1517.

Hidden Ones operate out of Bureaus. These are hidden from sight and accessible only by members of the organization. Each Bureau is helmed by a Rafiq.

Introduced to Baghdad from China and Central Asia at the end of the 8th century, cheap paper quickly replaced costly parchment and lead to the emergence of a strong reading culture in the Abbasid empire.

Ascribed to a divine being, the title "Father of Understanding" dates back to Isu times and reflects the Order of the Ancients' mission to guide humanity towards their idea of enlightenenment.

The Muslim calendar starts with the Hijra, the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622. Mirage is therefore set in the 3rd century After Hijra (AH). As of September 2023, we are in 1445 AH.

The Hidden Ones were founded in Egypt in 47 BCE. Working in the dark to serve the light, the organization aims to fight oppression and to safeguard the people's free will.

A highly advanced civilization, the Isu lived on Earth around seventy-seven thousand years ago and were the original creators of humanity.

The Order of the Ancients intend to use these ancient and elaborate pieces of Isu technology to control the population and revive the Isu.

The initiation ritual for becoming a Hidden One involves the sacrifice of a ring finger. Its removal ensures space for a retracted hidden blade, but is also a tribute to Bayek of Siwa, the original Hidden One.

In Baghdad, perfume was used in food, ink, and even mosque-building. One of the most sought-after perfume ingredients was Indian ambergris, a solid substance found in the digestive system of sperm whales.

Arabic language names are based on a chain of names systems, with each part having a meaning. Calling the Caliph Harun al-Rashid "Mr. Rashid" would therefore have been a terrible mistake.

Yangzhou City

As part of a family in Yangzhou City that has reared horses for generations, he has worked with horses every day of his life. The horses that he breeds are highly sought after by the Qin army in Yangzhao due to their handsomeness and strength.

An Artifact Appraiser in Yangzhou City, he was once a citizen of Zhao and aide to Lu Buwei. Adept at handling the relationship between the Qin and Xiongnu, he frequently resolves border disputes.

A craftsman who has lived in Yangzhou City since childhood, Heibo gets his name from his tanned complexion. The constant conflict near his hometown has given him ample opportunity to hone his weapon-forging skills.

A renowned chef who is a leading figure of Yangzhou delicacies. His specialty dish involves pouring a meat sauce made with three types of meat—rabbit meat, mutton, and venison—over rice. This dish is also the origin behind his self-appointed title: "Three Delights," or Sanchun.

An expert at raising pigeons. It is said that he understands their language. Despite living in the border town of Yangzhou, he acquires a lot of valuable intel thanks to his industrious birds.

A wandering merchant traveling by foot, he is temporarily staying in Yangzhou due to the war. Even though this miserly merchant of the Central Plains is not particularly good at business, he is still able to eke out a living.

Yunyang

The elder of two brothers from the south who settled down in Yunyang many years ago. His demeanor is reminiscent of Wu Yue, making him seem out of place in Qin.

A carriage driver who came back with the Qin army after the wars of unification. It is said that he used to be a citizen of Chu. He loves to brag that he is a good judge of horses, he's not wrong.

Once a Confucian scholar from Qi, he moved to Qin during the reign of King Zhuangxiang, serving as an official in Yunyang. Sometime after, he resign from his position and retreated into seclusion, choosing to join the Baiwen and search for treasure instead. To outsiders, he is a mere engraver.

The son of a concubine from an esteemed family, his original surname is not Huo. He is an excellent informer in Yunyang City, and his pigeons are so obedient that they can be commanded by anyone.

One of the best chefs in Yunyang City. His sauces are extremely tasty, and while he claims to be a peerless expert at butchering cows, a Qin law banning the slaughter of cows has prevented anyone from ever witnessing his skills firsthand.

A hawjer of both necessities and certain luxuries. Enjoys a decent reputation among Yunyang citizens for his reasonable prices and plain dealing.

Mohist Village

A cloistered village where Mohist scholars gather to observe their doctrines.

The Mohist who is most adept at procuring news and information. His dual identity as both a Mohist and a Qin soldier made him especially useful during the wars of unification.

A former Mohist, he peacefully left Mohism to become Lao Ai's aide. After roaming from place to place, he eventually returned to his hometown, using his special status to become the Artifact Appraiser of the Mohist Village.

A Mohist disciple whose hobby is cooking. Adept at making simple dishes out of common ingredients, he is also a devout follower of Mohism.

A craftsman who follows Mohism, he has been travelling abroad and preaching the teachings of Mohism for many years. After hearing about the Mohists' troubles, he rushed back from Shu and took on the majority of their smelting responsabilities.

Fushi City

A citizen of Lu who fled to Qin, it is said that he was once a high-ranking official during the Lu Buwei era. Today, he serves the Baiwen under the cover of anonimity, using the clan's influence to search for any traces of valuable treasure.

Part of a business-oriented family local to Fushi, his father named him Zhu Tao for good luck. However, his business acumen is average at best, which is why he has no plans to expand the business.

Honing his craft in the kitchens since childhood, he slowly worked his way up from a mere helper to a full-fledged chef. Zhong's two brothers died in the war [Missing part]

While he's failry unremarkable as a braftsman, he is adept at smelting common copper wares and ceremonial vessels.

Viewpoints

Northern Shangjun

This is an official market, with peace between soldiers and citizenry, and free trade between nomads and Qin. On most days this place is a forest of market stalls, all bustling with competition between merchants, filling the air with the verve of life.

This place hads been named Tulu Pass to commemorate Meng Tian's victory over the nomadic tribes. The pass has been critical in the war against the nomads, and fortifications have been built to repel invaders.

The first emperor of Qin formerly entrusted general Meng Tian to lead an army to attack the nomads and build the Great Wall. Today, the watchtowers have been destroyed, leaving behind ruins so dilapidated that even the bandits have abandoned them.

Located on top of a peak, the Altar of Soil and Grain is gorgeous yet solemn, displaying the people's devotion to the land. The governor offers sacrifices each year here, praying for a bounteous harvest in the coming year.

An earlier group of Qin citizens exploring outside the wall once rested here, and climbed up to look back on their hometown after the building of the wall, hence the name Homeview Stone.

This is a Great Wall watchtower over the North Pass. Gazing north from here, across the forlorn frontier beyond the wall, one can see a lonely cave that appears to have been deserted for many years. No one dares enter.

Originally built to observe the defensive line against the Xiongnu; however, the defensive line fell out of use once the Great Wall was built. What was once a watchtower now only silently watches over the barren hills by the river.

A constant stream of lumber and stone from Shangjun's forests and quarries flowed to the front line during the Great Wall's construction. General Meng established patrol posts near the forests and mines, and deployed troops to protect the supply line. This is one such fortification.

Southern Shangjun

The watchtowers south of the defensive line have seen a decline in importance since the Great Wall was built, but the Mt. Hei Garrison was built there to capitalize on its geographical advantages.

The defensive line was moved northward with the building of the Great Wall, rendering many of the watchtowers to the south ineffective, gradually leading to their abandonment.

Di District Granary Viewpoint: The granary is located in the midst of Di District's farmland. It not only carries all of the region's harvests, but also the hopes and dreams of the land.

The Viewpoint in Zhidao Pass has quietlu watched the vicissitudes of Shangjun since ancient times.

Di District Viewpoint: Di District is the premier city of the Shangjun region, sitting on Didao Ridge and facing the Great Wall. As a key northern transportation hub, it has been an area of great strategic importance throughout history.

Southern Didao Ridge

The tower of Yunyang City, commanding a view of Yunyang's prosperity and vitality.

Mt. Cuo'e is fifth among the mountain peaks, and is home to many bandits and rich mineral deposits.

Mt. Ya is sixth among the mountain peaks, and is near the location of Xingtian.

It is rumored that the ghosts of fallen soldiers still roam the battlefield near the lone tree that watches over Shadow Forest like a tombstone.

Mt. Huangya is fourth among the mountain peaks, and is iconic for its cliffs.

A lone cliff overlooking Xiaoxi Village. The scenery is breathtaking, but its proximity to the beast-infested mountains renders it inaccessible.

Ancient Eagle-Shaped Ding

An extremely rare ancient ceramic pot, or "ding," with an avian design. Once [sic] can speculate that this relic is used for sacrificial ceremonies. Ornamental creations already possessed vividly painted artwork in the ancient period this was made. This eagle-shaped ceramic pot is proof of the high degree of artistic ability possessed by our ancestors. This sacrificial vessel is a symbol of ancient peoples' totem worship.

Gold Cloud-Pattern Bowl

A wine vessel made of pure gold with handles made of jade, it is one of only a handful of works of art that combine the two. The level of skill and the amount of thought put into its design far outweigh the monetary value of the gold itself. Though gold smelting has reached an advanced level, turning pure gold into everyday utensils is still rarely done. Jade and gold are seen as symbols of blessings and good fortune, which explains people's fondness for such valuable utensils.

Jade Eye Copper Mirror

The glass beads on the back of this mirror are not items that any common family can afford to use. Initially, such items could only be obtained via trade with the Xiongnu. It is said that such beads were transported from the land to the Far West. Later, a group of craftsmen developed a new method of firing the glass, which is the primary reason why the back of this mirror is so extravagant.

Zither Carved wutg Taotie Pattern

A standard plucked zither with 25 strings. Decorated lavishly with ornamental patterns, such xithers are known as "gilded zithers" in the Rites of Zhou. Once a ritual musical instrument that only royalty could play, many have now found their way into the hands of common folk. Made with catalpa wood for the body and cow tendons as strings, zithers like these were played in rituals worshipping the heavens, especially during the Zhou dynasty. Confucians wish to revive this ritual system.

Ancient Ritual Music House

The palm-sized ornament features a pair of dancers and four musicians performing inside a house. The artist's uncanny ability to fit so much detail inside such a miniscule space makes this a stunning work of art. Thus we can see that the biggest difference between the nobility and commoners lies in the amount and type of amusements available to them. To the nobility, pleasure often takes higher priority than making a living. This attitude is especially prevalent among young noblemen, not yet burdened with affairs of state, whose unending demands on musicians and entertainers can lead to some rather absurd and fantastical performances.

Black Rongdi Bird Plate

Black ceramic wares are considered a novelty in every state, because only the people of Zhongshan can procure such wares. Zhongshan, being a state established by the Baidi people, has tried numerous times to get closer to the cultural sphere of the vassal states in the Central Plains. Producing these black ceramic wares is the result of such attempts. However, their identity as Baidi people has ultimately never been accepted. Even the state of Zhao, which introduced "barbarian-style" attire and horseback archery, has never once recognized Zhongshan as a "legitimate" vassal state.

Ancient Ceramic Tiger Figurine

An idol revered by the "Tiger" faith, a relatively primitive religious group compared to other, more complex, religious groups of Didao Ridge. It is clear that this relic has been handed down across many generations. It is generally believed that the tiger symbolizes Zhongshan nobility because it was viewed as the king of all animals. With a strong body and courageous spirit, it is only natural that the tiger was chosen by the gods to be their representative on earth. As a creature capable of devouring humans, it is both feared and revered by people.

Cloud-Patterned Lacquer Vessel

A vessel used to store wine or soup. This lacquerware is portable, and is used similarly to a cauldron. However, it is cheaper and more convenient. The vessel's surface features cloud patterns, with the word "Sidou" written on it referring to its capacity. The vessel's size is actually what makes the Cloud-Pattern Lacquer Fang so significant. Its use and the ability to fill it signifies that a high quality of life has been attained in Qin, and its users are members of the affluent portion of the population.

King of Zhongshan's Dragon Hu

A wine vessel with a square-shaped design commonly seen during the Warring States period. It once belonged to the ancient royal family of Zhongshan. Eight dragons are engraved onto the vessel, and marvelous inscriptions cover the surface, indicating the priceless value of this relic. This vessel was ordered to be cast by the King of Zhongshan for his prime minister. Used to store wine for paying respects to former kings, this artifact was a highly valuable ceremonial vessel during ancient times.

Phoenix-Crested Ladle

A dining ladle used by Qin officials. The ladle is engraved with the character for "salty," which serves as a reminder for the chef. The ladle is brilliantly carved and painted to resemble a phoenix, a very common design motif during the Qin dynasty. The Qin emperor is a direct descendant of the Shang dynasty, and thus, the Qin dynasty inherited a similar reverence for the celestial bird Xuan'niao. Its cultural importance can be seen in the prevalence of phoenix elements in everyday products.

Zhou Foal-Catching Gift

A ceremonial vessel granted by the King of Zhou himself as a token of recognition to a noble. The King of Zhou would bless foals that were ready to enter the royal herds during the ancient foal-catching rite, to thank and answer to the horse spirits that they worshipped. This ceremony held so much significance that nobles could be awarded special recognitions based on their performance.

Ancient Phoenix Head Basin

The basin was used for washing hands during ceremonies. It was a high-end item from the small state of Zhongshan and is rarely used now due to the complexity of the ceremonies. Zhongshan was made up of mainly Baidi people, who were one of the foreign races most influenced by the culture of the Central Pains. After several generations of great effort, the state officially received titles from the King of Zhou, an action opposed by his Ji clan vassals.

Mechanical Qin Lantern

A lighting device that makes use of some interesting mechanisms, widely used by Qin officials. Known for their emphasis on practicality and utility, the Qin kingdom have a deep appreciation for Mohist engineering. A certain Mohist engineer was once commissioned to design this lantern, which was then quickly distributed to every official who had to travel on long journeys.

Han Earthenware Censer

Painted censors [sic] were some of Han merchants' most traded items, and were very popoular with officials and commoners during the rule of King Zhaoxiang. Qin nobility (and those commoners who can afford it) incorporate incense into formalities within their homes, as incense is a symbol of a desirable life.

Chariot Shield

A shield equipped on bronze chariots for defense purposes. This painted leather and lacquer shield is commonly referred to as a "chariot shield" in the army. Every shield has paintings that represent Qin warriors' deep respect for the dangers of the battlefield.

General Shou's Bronze Dagger-Axe

A first-rate bronze dagger-axe used by General Xiang Shou's troops during the reign of King Zhao of Qin. Once the governor of Shangjun, his special relationship with the Su brothers allowed Baiwen ideas to flourish inside Qin. The names engraved on this dagger-axe were probably of great significance to him.

Qin Tiger Tally

This is one of the oldest tiger tallies used by Qin during the Warring States period. It is more than just a symbol of power—it serves as a key that allows orders to be validated and armies to be mobilized. Those who are given a tiger tally are given permission to make war on behalf of the king. The king usually keeps one half of the tally in his own possession.

Ancient Taotie-Patterned Axe Head

A bronze cast axe head with a Taotie design. The Shang bronze battle-axe was the standard weapon of the Shang dynasty. The Taotie, an ancient mythological creature that represents greed and gluttony, was a common motif on weapons and vessels during the Shang dynasty. Now this type of axe, as well as its Taotie design, is rarely used, showing that the way of life of later generations has become vastly different from those of the Shang.

Bronze Yan Short Sword

A ceremonial short sword worn by the nobility of the state of Yan. It makes for an excellent assassination weapon at close ranges. Though it can be used like a dagger, it can also be modified to be a hidden blade. Its appearance in large quantities around the Shangjun signifies the presence of Yan activity, which does not bode well for law and order in the area. Jing Ke and Gao Jianli failed in their assassination attempts on the Qin emperor, but it is said there are still like-minded comrades of theirs in Yan. According to some Qin soldiers, a familiar figure has appeared in the Shangjun, and it appears that he is a former dog butcher from Yan.

Xiongnu Hedgehog Accessory

This charming pendant of a curled-up hedgehog is used to adorn the clothes of nomadic peoples. The Xiongnu excel at gold working, and their adornments are covered in tiny, exquisite details. The hedgehog is known for its resilience in adverse environments, making it a symbol for those who seek to thrive on the harsh steppes.

Golden Bear and Sheep Accessory

Designed in a bear and sheep pattern using thin sheets of gold and exquisite turquoise inlays. It's unlikely that it could have belonged to anyone but a noble. Its design is typical of the style found in Wu and Yue, so it likely came from the southern region. Further research would probably trace its origin to the period when King Tang of Shang overthrew the last Xia ruler with his military prowess.

Xiongnu Deer Ornament

The Xiongnu are surrounded by wildlife in their everyday lives. They are familiar with the appearance and habits of these animals. Xiongnu craftsmen sculpt these familiar creatures to remind soldiers of their homeland in the steppes even, even as they do battle in faraway lands.

Xiongnu Antlered Deer Ornament

Bronze deer ornaments are prevalent among Xiongnu homes. The long-antlered stag stands tall and proud, brimming with energy. As these deer are commonly hunted for food, the nomads have a profound gratitude for the animal.
