The e-manual is the user guide for various animus devices. It is written in a weird mixture of in-universe and out-of-universe perspective.
Animus 3.0
1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 The Cast
1.1.1 Desmond Miles
The descendant of the Assassins Aquilus, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Ezio Auditore, and Ratonhnhaké:ton, Desmond Miles (born in 1987) was a member of the Assassin Brotherhood who left the organization when he was a teenager. In September 2012, he was captured by Abstergo Industries and forced to relive the memories of his ancestors through a machine called the Animus. Desmond later escaped and began to work with a small group of Assassins, returning to the Animus in order to help them circumvent the Templars’ plans.
1.1.2 Shaun Hastings
Shaun Hastings is a member of the modern-day Assassin Brotherhood. Working as an analyst and researcher, he is responsible for compiling and maintaining the knowledge archives of the Animus. Additionally, he provides tactical support and intelligence to Assassin cells around the world. While the nature of Shaun's work is mostly cerebral and he spends much of his time behind a desk rather than in the field, his contribution is instrumental in the ongoing race between Assassins and Templars to secure the remaining Pieces of Eden.
1.1.3 Rebecca Crane
Unlike most Assassins, Rebecca Crane was not born into the Brotherhood. Instead, she was actively recruited for her technical skills, which were supplemented by rigorous combat training upon her induction into the ranks of the Assassins. Within her team, Rebecca holds a support role alongside Shaun Hastings. Despite the dire circumstances that she and her team find themselves in, Rebecca remains a very optimistic and outgoing person. Friendly with her teammates and quick to joke, she sometimes seems immature despite how seriously she takes their mission and her work.
1.1.4 William Miles
William Miles (born 1948) is the driven, intelligent, but emotionally distant father of Desmond Miles. Born within the Assassin community, he has devoted his entire life to the ideals of the Brotherhood. He raised his son in a remote Assassin community called The Farm, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, outside Rapid City. William is a technically-minded man, fully devoted to the Assassins and their cause, whose passion for politics outweighs his responsibility to his family. While William’s wife has always been able to deal with this emotional distance, young Desmond could not. Eventually he grew to feel that his father was more of a drill sergeant than a parent and fled the compound, despite his parents’ repeated warnings to never leave.
1.1.5 Dr. Warren Vidic
Dr. Warren Vidic is the head of genetic research at Abstergo Industries, where he leads the Animus Project. One of the world’s leading authorities on genetic memory, Vidic has dedicated most of his life to the subject. It is in great part because of his theories that the Animus device was created, with Vidic leading the initiative from the onset.
1.1.6 Daniel Cross
Daniel Cross (born 1974) was a late 20th century descendent of the Russian Assassin Nikolai Orelov. Plagued by hallucinations of his ancestor’s memories, he became a criminal, as well as a drug addict and alcoholic. Daniel was instrumental in the assassination of the leading member of the modern-day Assassins known as "The Mentor", and the near-destruction of the Brotherhood in 2000. Abstergo Industries kidnapped Daniel at an early age. Under the designation Subject 4, his genetic memory was explored and his mind experimented upon by Warren Vidic. The latter implanted Daniel with a false identity and, most importantly, a single impulse: to locate the Mentor, and kill him.

2.1 Animus Controls
Hello Desmond. The Animus allows you to control your ancestor Connor through a combination of standard and contextual buttons. Standard buttons always perform the same action. For example, holding [RB] always activates the Weapon Wheel. On the other hand, Contextual buttons change depending on the context that Connor is currently in. For example, pressing [B] can make Connor open doors, examine a clue, or take the wheel of a boat, depending on the context.
2.2 General Actions
2.2.1 Move
Move using [LS]. Up or down moves your ancestor forward or backward. Left or right makes Connor turn to the left or to the right. Press and hold [A] to walk quickly; you will also gently push people out of your way while holding [A].
2.2.2 Look
Use [RS] to look around the environment. Pressing [RSpress] re-centers the camera.
2.2.3 High & Low Profile Concept
It is possible to change the intensity of Connor's actions. By default, your ancestor will be in Low Profile, but his state can be changed to High Profile by pressing and holding [RT]. This is like stepping on the gas! In Low Profile, Connor’s actions are inconspicuous and more socially acceptable. Fast and powerful assassin moves such as freerunning or tackling are available in High Profile.
2.2.4 Targeting and Lock On
We’ve upgraded the targeting and locking system to make things a little easier for you in the Animus. As you move around in the environment, you’ll notice that only some characters are highlighted; these characters are your ranged targets. By default, only enemy and military targets are highlighted. When you hold [LT], Precision Mode is activated, which allows you to target any character at will. Simply move the crosshairs over the character you want to target and they will become highlighted. If you press [LT] while you have a character highlighted, you will lock on to that character and the camera will follow them.
2.2.5 Weapons
Pressing [X] will use your currently equipped melee weapon. Note that you can only target military and enemy targets by default; you have to use Precision Mode (see "Target and Lock On" for details) to select civilian targets. Your melee target has a stronger visual highlight than the ranged target.
You can prepare an attack by holding [X] as you run toward an enemy. When you are in range, the attack will automatically be triggered. You can use this technique to do fluid, continuous attacks without stopping.
If you select the hidden blades as your melee weapon, you will be able to assassinate 2 targets at the same time if they are in range. Additionally, the hidden blades have a stealth kill available: if you are in Low Profile attacking a target will make Connor perform a stealth kill which allows you to escape the scene before anyone notices what happened. If you are in High Profile (holding [RT]) your kill will be overt and witnessed.
2.2.6 Tools
Pressing [Y] will use your currently selected tool. Some tools, such as trip mines, require you to hold [Y] to deploy them. Weapons such as muskets or pistols will fire every time you press [Y] as long as there is a bullet loaded in the weapon, otherwise it will reload the weapon. If you want to reload a double barreled pistol after only one shot, you can press [RB] to reload.
Some weapons, such as muskets, have two functions. If you press [X] you will use the musket as a melee weapon; if you press [Y] you will shoot the musket. If a weapon has two functions it will override both your melee and tool icons in the HUD.
2.2.7 Contextual Actions
All of the contextual interactions are on the [B] button. Interactive objects have a highlight, and when you approach them you’ll see the interaction either in the world or in the HUD. Press [B] to activate the interaction. Contextual actions include starting missions, opening doors, picking up weapons, picking pockets, and so on. If the action requires time to complete (such as looting a body or picking a pocket) you will see a radial display on screen that indicates how long it will take to complete the action. Keep holding [B] until it fills completely.
2.3 Actions
2.3.1 On Ground
Low Profile
Pressing [A] makes Connor walk faster and gently push people out of his way.
Pressing [B] in front of an interactive object makes Connor interact with it. You can also pick pockets by holding [B] while in low profile.
Pressing [X] with a nearby enemy highlighted uses your currently selected melee weapon.
Pressing [Y] uses your currently selected tool. Note that ranged weapons require a highlighted target to use them.
Safe Freerunning
2.3.2 Fight
If Connor is near an enemy that is fighting, he will automatically adopt a fighting stance and strafe around the enemy. You can move out of the fight stance by holding [RT].
2.3.3 Horse
Low Profile
Use [LS] to steer the horse. The farther you move [LS], the faster the horse will move in that direction.
Press [B] to dismount or interact with something nearby.
Press [A] to make the horse rear up.
Press [X] to assassinate a highlighted target in range.
Press [Y] to use a selected ranged weapon.
Gallop by holding [RT]. While galloping, press [A] to spur your horse and gain a speed boost. If you overuse [A] the horse will tire and slow down.
Hold [B] to prepare to jump off the horse. When you release it, you’ll jump in the direction you’re pointing[LS].
If you pass under a low beam or branch while holding [B] you’ll automatically jump up to grab it. Release [RT] if you want to cancel your jump.
2.3.4 Swimming
Press [B] while in Low Profile to dive under the water. Being underwater breaks the line of sight, but Connor can only do so for a limited time.
Press and hold [RT] to swim faster. You cannot dive under water while holding [RT].
2.3.5 Skip Cinematics
During a cinematic, press and hold [B] to skip the cinematic.
3 HUD
3.1 HUD Elements
The HUD provides important information while in the Animus. Various elements of the display will allow you to remain aware of your current status. 0x48d3a1647
3.1.1 Life Bar
The Life bar indicates how much health you currently have. Get out of combat to rest up and regenerate your health.
3.1.2 Notoriety Meter
Indicates your Notoriety Status and what level of Notoriety you have. See the Gameplay Loop section on Detection for more details.
3.1.3 Weapon Icon
Indicates your currently equipped weapon.
3.1.4 Tool Icon
Indicates your currently selected tool. If it’s bright, it means you can use your tool (a valid target is selected, or the tool can be deployed in this area.)
If both the weapon and tool are the same icon, it means the item you have selected can be used as either a melee weapon [X] or a ranged weapon [Y].
If a ranged weapon is selected, the bars on the icon indicate how many shots you have available.
3.1.5 Controls HUD
Displays the available contextual actions.
3.1.7 Recruit HUD
The Mini-Map displays the location of various important memory objectives. A good way to reveal the Mini-Map is to climb to the top of buildings and scan the view. The higher you go, the more you reveal of the map. Your next main line story mission is always indicated with a (!). Secondary missions are indicated using various diamond-shaped icons; these are optional side content that you can engage in.
3.2 Social Status Indicator (SSI)
3.2.1 NPC Arrows and Mini-Map's frame
Groups and Single NPCs are easily recognizable in the crowd with their SSI. Guards SSI tell you if they are alerted to your presence or not.
1. Yellow: They're suspicious of you.
2. Red: They're chasing you.
3. White: They have lost sight of you.
3.3 Animus Feedback System (AFS)
The AFS gives you relevant and necessary information for playing the game.
3.3.1 Memories AFS
Memory Objectives and warnings are displayed at the top left of the screen.
3.3.2 Informative AFS
Information about systems is displayed in the top right of the screen.
3.3.3 Critical AFS
If there is information you must act on quickly, such as low health warnings, it is displayed in the center of the screen.
4 GAMEPLAY LOOP
4.1 Detection Loop
4.1.1 Detection
When you are Incognito (guards are unaware of your presence) guards will only react to dead bodies or illegal actions (killing, pushing them, looting, picking pockets…). If you don't do any of these actions you'll remain anonymous.
4.1.2 Escape
In order to escape from your enemies, break their line of sight and hide.
Enemies that are investigating you (yellow marker) will walk toward you until you break their line of sight (white marker). Once they reach the last place they saw you, they will give up if they no longer see you.
Enemies in conflict with you (red marker) will keep chasing until you break the line of sight with them and hide.
4.1.3 Vanish (Hide and/or Blend)
Jump in a hay bale, blend with the crowd, sit on a bench between some people, hide in the back of a cart or in a merchant stand, or jump in a well to escape from enemies that are chasing or investigating you. Some enemies will search the area rather than chase after you, so keep in mind that you may have to kill them as well.
Once hidden or blended, you’ll begin to vanish (blue in the Notoriety Meter).
4.2 Notoriety Loop
The more you enter conflict and kill enemies, the more your Notoriety rises.
To lower your notoriety meter, you can remove wanted posters from walls, bribe newspaper boys, and bribe Newspaper Printers.
Removing Wanted Posters to lower your notoriety slowly. Bribing Newspaper Boys will make them stop talking about you. Buying special editions from Newspaper Printers will remove your notoriety completely.
5 IN-GAME MENUS
5.1 Weapon and Tool Selector + Quick Inventory
Holding [RB] opens the Weapon and Tool Wheel. You can independently select the weapon and tool that you want to equip by moving [LS] and [RS].
During gameplay, the Quick Inventory allows you to select weapons and tools without opening the Weapon Wheel. Press [Dpad] in a direction to select the weapon assigned to that direction.
You can customize your Quick Inventory when the Weapon Wheel is open. Press the [Dpad] in any direction to assign the last weapon or tool that you selected onto that direction.
5.2 Animus Menu
Press [Back] to display a map of the area and open the Animus Menu. The Animus Menu includes a host of new functionality, so make sure to explore a little to get to know it. The Animus is able to fill in a basic outline of the area from historical data, but details will have to be filled in by you. As you navigate the world you will reveal the map in more detail. Zoom in and out with [LTm] and [RTm]. You can zoom all the way out to see the East Coast map, and from there you can zoom back in to see the map of the cities, Frontier or Homestead.
5.2.1 Logbook
The Logbook collects and records the status of all of your Citizen Missions, Club Challenges, and Almanac Pages. The first level of the list contains the high level collections of each mission type, and at the second level of the menu you can see the details of each side mission you currently have.
5.2.2 Inventory
This is a list of all of the items Connor has collected that you can trade with the stores. Items related to a mission cannot be sold.
5.2.3 Hunting Map
The Hunting Map is only available in the Frontier and Homestead maps once you’ve unlocked the system as Connor. It shows the different regions of the Frontier, and the different animals that you have discovered in that region. It is useful when you want to hunt a particularly rare type of animal; if you’ve previously discovered that animal, you will know where to start looking for it again. An animal is considered 'discovered' in an area if you’ve analyzed a sign it has left (footprints, scat, etc.) or if you trap or kill the animal.
5.2.4 Liberation Missions Map
The Liberation Missions map is only available in cities once you’ve unlocked the system as Connor. This details your progress of removing the Templar influence in each district of the city, as well as your contact in each district.
You can access Naval missions through the Naval Map interface. Simply move the selection to the naval icon to view any Naval missions that are available at this moment. This menu becomes available as soon as you’ve unlocked the naval section of the game.
5.3 Assassin Wheel
Hold [LB] to open the Assassin Wheel. This allows you to select which ability is active and will be called when you press [LB]. You can also access the Guild menu by pressing [X] while the Assassin Wheel is open. The Guild Menu allows you to send Recruits on missions to gain experience, loot and money.
When you are in conflict, the selected Assassin ability is always changed to “Call Backup”. This will cause your Recruit to jump in to help you out in combat. Once the conflict is resolved, the order will return to what you had selected previously.
6 PAUSE MENU
The Pause menu gives access to the system functions of the Animus.
6.1 Reload Last Checkpoint (not in Exploration)
Selecting this will return you to the last checkpoint inside of a mission. If you’ve missed an optional objective, it might help you to just reload a checkpoint rather than start the mission over again!
6.2 Leave Animus
This ejects Desmond from the Animus, returning you to the Present.
6.3 Restart Memory (not in Exploration)
Selecting this will restart the memory you are currently in from the beginning.
6.4 Exit Memory (not in Exploration)
Selecting this will return you to Exploration mode without saving your progress in the mission.
6.5 Quit
This will end your session and return you to the main menu.
6.6 Notification Center
This lists all of the AFS that have occurred recently. You can find out what you missed during a mission by visiting the notification center.
6.7 Options
Configure your gameplay experience in here.
6.8 Animus Training Center
View this manual and other tips on how to play the game. It also allows you access to the stats and leaderboards.
6.9 DNA Tracker
View your progress in the game. The DNA Tracker also allows you to replay memories you’ve already completed; find the memory you want in the grid and press [A].
6.10 Animus Database
View information about the people you’ve met, places you’ve visited and other fascinating tidbits. The database also allows you to view unlocked artwork and read letters.
Hold [RT]: Hold the High Profile button to make your ancestor sprint and perform freerunning.
Holding this button down makes Connor automatically adapt to any object in the path. Just push [LS] in the direction you want him to go. You no longer have to hold the [A] button to freerun!
While you are freerunning, you will only take “safe” jumps. If you want to jump off of where you are with no regard for safety, you can press [A].
Also, if you are using [RT] to freerunning through trees and there is a choice between going forward and going up, Connor will move forward by default. You can hold [A] to make Connor jump up higher in the trees.
If there is a low object such as a small fence in front of Connor, [RT] will first make Connor jump on top of the fence and then continue moving in whatever direction you are pressing. If you want to make Connor pass smoothly over the small object, hold [A] while you approach it.
While holding [RT] you will also automatically pass under objects that have small openings underneath them.
If you press and hold [X] while you are in High Profile, you will prepare your weapon to strike the first enemy that comes in range. You will be able to continue moving fluidly while you take down the enemy. If you have the hidden blades selected, Connor can take out 2 enemies at the same time.
While in high profile, Connor will automatically shove people out of his way. If you want to tackle a specific highlighted target, press [B] when you are near them.
You will automatically face the enemy you are moving towards.
Press [X] to attack the enemy you are facing.
Press [Y] to use your currently selected tool.
Press [A] to perform an opening attack; this is useful for defeating enemies that deflect your normal attacks.
Press and hold [B] to deflect incoming enemy attacks.
Enemies that are attacking you have a small red sign above their head. If you press [B] while the sign is visible, you can counter their move.
Once you start a counter move, you can choose different ways to finish it off:
[X] Kills the enemy
[Y] Uses your tool on the enemy
[A] Disarms and stuns the enemy
[B] Throws the enemy
Certain enemies are not vulnerable to your normal attacks. You must use a different strategy to defeat them.
If an enemy has a yellow sign above their head, they are going to perform a special attack - such as shoot a gun, throw a grenade, or perform a heavy attack. These attacks cannot be blocked.
Grenades and Heavy Attacks must be dodged or avoided. To defend yourself against a gunshot, move close to another enemy and press [A] to use them as a human shield.
High Profile
The Recruit HUD displays the currently selected Assassin Recruit ability. The indicators next to the icon show how many Assassin Recruits are available. If the icon is bright, you have a valid target selected for your Recruit ability. Some abilities such as Ambush do not need a target, and are triggered where you are standing.
3.1.6 Mini-Map
The Notoriety Meter is also a Risk Indicator that is synchronized with your enemies’ state.
Empty: You are Anonymous.
Green: You are Hidden.
Red: You are in Open Conflict with Guards - you have to escape or fight.
Yellow: You are in Open Conflict, but have broken the line of sight from Guards so you can hide.
Blue: You are vanishing.
The more notorious you are, the more guards will pay attention to you.
At the first level of Notoriety, guards are vaguely aware of you. They will slowly notice your presence if you are not blended, and will then investigate you before entering conflict.
At the second level of Notoriety, guards are aware of your presence and will investigate you on sight.
At the third level of Notoriety, guards will enter conflict with you on sight, and certain high-level guards will search for you in the crowd. There will also be more guards will be present in the city overall.
Note: Because being on rooftops is forbidden, snipers will always detect anyone on sight.
Enemies in military zones (red zones on the map) are more alert and will pay more attention to you if they see you; even if you are not notorious they will be interested in your presence.
With the main map selected, you can scroll around the map using [RS]. You can also use [LSX] to reveal the map filters. Scrolling through the filters changes the type of icons that are displayed on the map.
From the main level of the map wheel, you can also access the Logbook, Inventory, Hunting Map, Liberation Missions, and Naval Map using [LSY]. See below for details on each of these sections.

Animus Omega
1.1 Edward Kenway
In 1712, Edward married Caroline Scott, a woman of slender means born in Bristol, against her parents’ wishes. Edward touched on the idea of joining a privateering fleet sailing for the West Indies with the hope of making war against the Spanish and collecting unchecked sums of gold. This, he told his wife, was their get-rich-quick scheme. Being a sensible and prudent woman, Caroline tried to discourage these ideas. Edward decided he needed to earn his fortune fast. He left for the West Indies one month later.

5.4.3 Boarding Outcome
When all objectives are completed, the enemy crew will surrender. You can then decide their destiny. Whatever your decision, you will also steal the whole ship’s cargo and make it your own.
5.5 Cargo and Resources
5.5.1 Gathering Resources
By boarding and plundering ships you will gather cargo. Cargo can also be found in small quantities floating at sea or on the ground. Several locations, such as Warehouses, also conceal cargo deposits.

Ship upgrades are mandatory if you want to progress as a pirate in the West Indies. From a Harbourmaster's or directly from your Captain’s Cabin, you can acquire new ship upgrades. Some will allow you to increase your hull’s resistance or your storage capacities, but others will increase your firepower, the number of cannons, or even provide you with new weapon types.
Upgrades will require gold, but most of them will also require Cargo to build them. You can find Cargo by attacking other ships, then boarding and plundering them.
5.7 Wanted System
Defeating and plundering ships can get you into trouble. Your reputation as a pirate will increase with your illegal actions at sea. The Wanted Meter indicates the status of your reputation, if it runs too high hunter ships will be sent after you and will chase you down without mercy. 3.1.2 High and Low Profile concept
It is possible to change the intensity of Shay's actions. By default, Shay will be in Low Profile, but his state can be changed to High Profile by pressing and holding [RT].
In Low Profile, Shay’s actions are inconspicuous and more socially acceptable. Fast and powerful moves, such as free running or tackling, are available in High Profile.
3.1.3 Contextual interaction
Pressing [B] in front of an interactive object makes Shay interact with it. You can also pick pockets by holding [B] while in Low Profile.
3.1.4 Looking around
Use [RS] to look around the environment. Pressing [RSpress] re-centers the camera.
3.1.5 Eagle Vision
Clicking [LSpress] activates Eagle Vision. Eagle Vision conveys information by highlighting environmental features. Eagle Vision is color-coded: red highlighting indicates enemies, white indicates hiding locations, gold indicates mission targets, and blue indicates allies.
Whenever there are powerful enemies hidden nearby, the compass at the bottom of the screen in Eagle Vision will also display the approximate direction they lie in. Captains are indicated in RED and Stalkers in YELLOW on the compass.
3.1.6 Surface swimming
Swim using [LS]. Press and hold [RT] to swim faster. Hold [B] to dive below the water surface and progress undetected. The time you can stay underwater is limited by your oxygen gauge.

Press and hold [RB] to show the location information panel. It displays precious information on what is left to collect in your current area.
3.1.8 Skip cinematic
During some cinematics, press and hold [B] to skip the cinematic.
3.2 Free running
Hold [RT]: Hold the High Profile button to sprint and perform free running.
Holding this button down makes Shay automatically adapt to any objects in his path. Just push [LS] in the direction you want him to go.
While you are free running, you will make only “safe” jumps. If you want to jump from where you are, with no regard for safety, you can press [A].
If there is a low object such as a small fence in front of Shay, [RT] will first make Shay jump on top of the fence and then continue moving in whatever direction you are pressing. If you want to make Shay pass smoothly over a small object, hold [A] while you approach it.
While holding [RT] you will also automatically pass under objects that have small openings underneath them.
If you press and hold [X] while you are in High Profile, you will prepare your weapon to strike the first enemy that comes in range. You will be able to continue moving fluidly while you take down the enemy. If you have the hidden blades selected, Shay can take out two enemies at the same time.

Shay can craft a new pistol holster to perform up to two quick shots in succession by simply pressing [Y] repeatedly.
3.3.5 Reloading
You can reload any weapon by using [LB]. The weapon will also automatically reload if you try to use it and it is empty.

You can prepare an attack by holding [X] as you run toward an enemy. When you are in range, the attack will automatically be triggered. You can use this technique to do fluid, continuous attacks without stopping.
If you select the hidden blades as your weapon, you will be able to assassinate two targets at the same time if they are in range. Additionally, the hidden blades allow you to perform stealth kills: if you are in Low Profile, attacking a target will make Shay perform a stealth kill which allows you to escape the scene before anyone notices what happened. If you are in High Profile (holding [RT]) your kill will be overt and witnessed.

Whatever your decision, you will also claim all of the ship’s cargo and make it your own.
5.5 Cargo and resources
5.5.1 Gathering resources
By boarding and plundering ships you will gain cargo resources. Small quantities of cargo can be found floating at sea or on the ground. Several locations, such as warehouses, settlements, and supply camps also conceal cargo deposits, which you can claim after completing certain tasks there.

Ship upgrades are necessary if you want to progress as a captain in the colonies. You can acquire new ship upgrades either from a Harbourmaster's or directly from your Captain’s cabin.
