Śarīra are Isu artifacts. They are said to be the remains of Isu and that they contain their memories.

By 754, the Chinese monk Jianzhen was in possession of some śarīras. Realizing their potential, Jianzhen worked with Abe no Nakamaro and Li Bai to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands and planned to move the artifacts away from Tang China towards Japan,. That year, Jianzhen and Abe no Nakamaro boarded a ship bound for Japan. During the journey, the ship Abe no Nakamaro sailed on was ran aground, and Nakamaro awoke on the shore of Annam, unaware of the fate of Jianzhen and the śarīras.
