Yamabe (山部; 735 – 806), also known as Emperor Kanmu (桓武天皇), was the 50th emperor of Japan, reigning from 781 until his death.[1] Kanmu is regarded as a foundational figure in Japanese history, being the only emperor that wielded a lot of power, unencumbered by regents or shōguns.[2]

During his reign, Kanmu moved the capital city of Japan from Nara, home to many scandals to do with the Buddhist clergy, to the new Nagaoka-kyō. However, due to an uprising and following religious issues, another relocation needed to be undertaken. Kanmu then set out on a trip with his geomancers to find the perfect place for a new capital, eventually settling in what would become Kyoto. In 794, Kanmu, along with his court and army arrived by palanquin at the Imperial Palace,[2] which would remain as the home to the Emperors of Japan until Emperor Meiji moved to Tokyo in 1869.[3]
