| They call me many things: Murderer. Cutthroat. Thief. But you may call me Xex. This article is about a subject that lacks an official name and is known only by its nickname, title, or alias. |
Xex was a loan shark active in the early 9th century.
Biography
Around 810, Xex lent Maryam some money to help her start her mobile brothel, along with other wealthy benefactors, though she did not pay him back in full, keeping him as a silent partner for the political passage he granted her and her employees, guaranteeing a certain level of protection for them and a consistent payout for him.[1] In 823, with the interest in that loan being enough to trap Maryam with no way to clear it, Xex decided to start running the caravan along with other loan sharks. Around the same time, the Mongolian merchant Bogd was also in high debt with Xex, which he planned to have the man pay by taking his three wives, who would then be cycled into the brothel. Bogd, however, received an offer for enough money to pay his debts by an anonymous benefactor on the condition that he released his youngest wife, Masha, which he complied with.[2]
