William Varley
William Varley[1] (1835-1876), known criminally under the alias "Reddy the Blacksmith" was a leader of the Bowery Boys, a gang operating in New York City at the time of the American Civil War.
Biography
Early life
Formerly a blacksmith, Varley decided he didn't have the knack for it and turned to a life of debauchery but kept the title of "Blacksmith" as part of his alias.[2]
New York draft riots
The Assassin Varius had some influence on him, leading the Bowery Boys to ally with the Five Points' men in order to stop the draft riots.[3] Conversely, when the Templar Grand Master William M. Tweed approached Varley to try to involve his gang in the riots, the Blacksmith immediately refused.[4]
