Whitby Abbey
Whitby Abbey is a abbey located in Whitby, England.
History[edit | edit source]
Originally established in 657 CE,[1] by 820 it was home to Brissy the Elder and other monks dedicated to creating illuminated manuscripts. In 820, however, it was raided by Viking Rig Reidarasson and his men, who slaugthered many before Rig himself stopped all violence upon entering the abbey's scriptorium and becoming enamored with the beauty of the room and its golden manuscripts. The Vikings then settled in an old Roman outpost nearby, founding the town of Goldness.[2]
