The Voynich manuscript is an illustrated codex hand-written in an unknown writing system. Likely written during the early 15th century in Italy, the manuscript is named after book dealer Wilfrid Voynich, who purchased it in 1912.

During the early 18th century, the manuscript was in the possession of Governor Peter Beckford of Jamaica. After it was taken from the Beckford estate, its pages were scattered across the Caribbean. Between 1715 and 1722, the pirate Assassin Edward Kenway collected the manuscript pages.

In 2013, Abstergo Industries wanted the employees of Abstergo Entertainment to keep an eye out for the Voynich manuscript during the Animus sessions of the Sample 17 Project.
