Ulfberht blades are medieval European swords, dated to the 9th to 11th centuries, inlaid with the inscription +VLFBERHT+. Ulfberht was a Frankish personal name that became a trademark used by various blacksmiths.[1]
History
In the mid-800s, one of these blades which originated in the central European Carolingian Empire was in the possession of the East Anglian ealdorman Lerion, who kept it in his personal villa. Following his execution, the sword wound up in the hands of bandits at the Forest Hideout until it was looted from a chest by the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan.[2]
In 866, following the Viking Capture of York, Ivarr the Boneless gifted one of these swords to Ulf Stensson.[3] Another such blade was made into a short sword which Eivor later recovered while aiding the Viking leader Sigfred in his efforts laying siege to the Frankish city of Paris.[4]
Centuries later during the Victorian era, another one of the blades was kept in Buckingham Palace in Westminster. In 1868, it was stolen by Jacob and Evie Frye, twin members of the British Brotherhood of Assassins, who used it to craft one of their items.[5] [citation needed]
