Tobacco is a common plant from the Nicotiana genus and the Solanaceae family. The dried leaves are smoked in cigarettes or pipes.

During the 17th century, tobacco was sold as a commodity by several privateers. Shipments of it were also handled by the Royal Navy and the French Navy.[1] It was later smoked in cigars during the American Revolutionary War.[2]

Recreational use of tobacco continued into the modern era.[2]
