Thomas Conway (1735 – c. 1800) was an Irish army officer served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.

Biography

Around the time his fellow general, Horatio Gates, had led the army to a decisive victory at Saratoga and head of the Continental Army George Washington had taken losses at Germantown and Brandywine, Conway wrote extensively to Gates about Washington's failings. When Washington learned of the letters, he took it as a sign that both his subordinates were conspiring behind his back to replace him and Gates and Conway had to explain themselves before Congress. The episode, which became known as the "Conway Cabal", ended with Gates apologizing and Conway being forced to resign. Conway remained very publicly critical of Washington until he was shot in the mouth by one of Washington's supporters.[1]
