Theodosius I (Latin: Flavius Theodosius Augustus; 11 January 347 – 17 January 395), born Flavius Theodosius, was Roman Emperor from 379 to his death. He was a devout Christian and ordered the destruction of various religious sites dedicated to the Greco-Roman gods and in 393 he banned all pagan religious rites.

In 390, Theodosius transported an Egyptian obelisk from Alexandria to Constantinople, where he placed it in the Hippodrome on an ornately carved base that he had specially constructed to hold it. In 393, Theodosius repaired, improved and christened the Forum of Theodosius to commemorate his victories in battle and politics. He also augmented the Harbor of Theodosius, causing it to become a major port for the trading of agricultural goods, and later a military outpost.
