Theodore (died 867) was the childhood tutor to Emperor Leo VI the Wise in Constantinople in the 9th century.
Biography
In 867, Theodore worked as the tutor to a young Leo,[1] but was in correspondence with the Order of the Ancients to kill Leo. Meeting with Ursina, a fortune teller and ally to the Order, he aided in a plan to attack the guards at the children's wing and even offered to poison some of the guards.[2] While working, he soon began a relationship with Leo's nurse Anna and offered a new life away with her from the palace.[3]
However, the attack plan changed after Anna offered to bribe the Order's leader Isaac with a jeweled comb for Leo's life.[3] Days after the first attempt on Leo's life,[4]at the night, the children's wing was under sieged by the Order with Theodore poisoning the guards and Anna and Leo being the targets. However, the Varangian guard and Eagle Clan leader Thyra and her allies, Hidden Ones Basim Ibn Ishaq and his acolyte Hytham held their ground and defeated most of the Order's attackers.[5]
Death
Theodore's part was soon uncovered by Hytham's investigation due to his note to the Order,[6] and as a result, his cooperation with the attemtp was brought before both Emperor Basil I and Empress Eudocia Ingerina. Immediately, Theodore was sentenced to death, as to cut loose ends in the alliance between the Order and Emperor Basil.[2]
