Tenryū-ji (天龍寺; English: Flying Dragon Temple)[1] is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. Founded in 1339 by Shōgun Ashikaga Takauji and the Buddhist monk Musō Soseki,[2] it was meant to celebrate the recently-passed Emperor Go-Daigo's soul.[1] Musō became the temple's first head priest and established a garden there, arguing that one could attain enlightenment not just by meditating but also by creating beautiful art.[1]
