Tenryū-ji (天龍寺; English: Flying Dragon Temple)[1] is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. Meant to celebrate the recently-passed Emperor Go-Daigo's soul,[1] Tenryū-ji was founded by shōgun Ashikaga Takauji and Buddhist monk Musō Soseki in 1339.[2] Musō became the temple's first head priest and established a garden there, arguing that one could attain enlightenment not just by meditating but also by creating beautiful art.[1]
