The Taíno were an Arawak seafaring indigenous peoples of the Bahamas, Greater Antilles, and the northern Lesser Antilles.

The Lucayan branch of the Taíno were the first Native Americans encountered by the Europeans during Christoffa Corombo's journey to the New World in 1492. Under Spanish oppression, the Taíno were driven to the brink of extinction.

After the Assassins spread their influence to the New World in 1503, several members of the Taíno chose to join their ranks. Miguel Ramón Carlo de Lugo[1] and Opía Apito were notable Taíno members of the Assassin Brotherhood.[2]
