Squirrels are small, herbivorous rodents belonging to the Sciuridae family. Squirrel species are native to North and South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia.

These small critters often reside in treetops and come down to the ground for foraging. They mainly eat several types of nuts. They have slender bodies and bushy tails, used to keep their balance whilst navigating trees.

History

During the 9th century, the shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir could hunt squirrels in England, and sell their bones for money at merchants.[1]

She also encountered a squirrel named Ratatosk in a vision of Jötunheimr, with which she flyted.[1]
