The Sons of Xerxes were remnants of the Achaemenid Empire who remained in Greece after the Persian defeat during the Greco-Persian Wars. When King Xerxes I retreated to Persia after the failed second invasion, several members of the army remained in Greece instead, settling down in northern Greece.

By the Peloponnesian War, the Sons of Xerxes settled in the area surrounding the village of Lalaia, harrassing the village's residents and hunters. Desperate for aid, the village sought the help of the Spartan misthios Kassandra.[1]
