Ariadne was a Cretan princess and the goddess of the labyrinth, mazes and snakes in Greek mythology.
According to legends, Ariadne fell in love with Theseus, a hero and the mythological founder of Athens. When Theseus returned to Athens, they eloped and he abandoned Ariadne on the island of Naxos, where the princess was killed by the huntress, Artemis, for defiling a sacred place dedicated to her.[1]
The site where Ariadne died was later visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra during the Peloponnesian War.[1]
