Ariadne was a Cretan princess and the goddess of the labyrinth, mazes and snakes in Greek mythology.

According to legends, Ariadne fell in love with Theseus, a hero and the mythological founder of Athens. When Theseus returned to Athens, he abandoned Ariadne on the island of Naxos, where the princess was killed by Artemis for defiling a sacred place dedicated to the huntress.[1]

The site where Ariadne died was later visited by the Spartan misthios, Kassandra, during the Peloponnesian War.[1]
