Shutoku (周徳) was a 16th century painter-monk, also known by the style name Ikei (惟馨). Exact details on his life are mostly unknown, though a collection of works of his are associated with Senbayashi Sōkei (千林宗桂), the 85th abbot of Daitokuji, who died in 1543.[1][2] He was a disciple and eventual successor of Sesshū Tōyō, inheriting his studio Unkoku-an.[3]

Legacy and influence[edit | edit source]

By 1582, Shutoku had become known as a master craftsman. The tea master Sen no Rikyū had in his possession a bamboo hishaku made by the monk that he would later gift to the Assassin Fujibayashi Naoe.[4]
