Selim al-Toumi at-Thabiti (died 1516) was the last amir of Algiers reigning from 1510 until his death,[1] who proposed that he would turn a blind eye to the activity of the Assassins in the region, provided that a group of Ottoman Assassins would protect a community of Moors residing on the island of Penon from the Castilian Spaniards that occupied it.[2]

Biography

In 1510, the Spanish of Castile established a presence on Peñón de Algiers, a small island near Algiers,[2] compelling the new amir Selim, to sign a treaty and pay tribute. The island was fortified with advanced military technology, and Selim was obligated to travel to Spain to swear allegiance to King Ferdinand II of Aragon, a period coinciding with the rising influence of the Barbary Corsairs in the region.[3] At the same time, he also enlisted the help of the Ottoman Assassins to protect the Moorish population of the island.[2]

By 1516, Selim had invited the Barbary Corsair Aruj al-Din Barbarossa to assist in his endeavor to expel the Spanish. Barbarossa betrayed Selim however, killing him in September of that year. Barbarossa would go on to procure power for himself.[3]
