Saltpeter, also known as saltpetre, salt peter, and salt of Petra, is a naturally occurring mineral form of potassium nitrate.

History

During the 15th century, the common recipe for gunpowder included saltpeter mixed with sulfur and charcoal, as used by the Italian Brotherhood of Assassins for their smoke bombs.

Similarly in 16th century Constantinople, 'Salt of Petra' was used in the crafting of bombs by the Ottoman Brotherhood.

Behind the scenes

Saltpeter can be used to refer to either niter, the mineral, or the chemical compound, Potassium nitrate. Historically, niter has further been confused with natron.
