Saint Maurice

Maurice (died 286) was an Egyptian military leader, said to have led the Theban Legion of the Roman Empire. Maurice, along with the rest of the Legion, totalling 6666 men who had converted to Christianity, were martyred together in the Roman Switzerland outpost of Agaunum. Their deaths were considered to have made Agaunum hallowed ground and Maurice was later revered as a saint. By the 820s, an abbey had already been established in Agaunum and consacrated in his name.
