Rye

Rye, or Secale cereale, is a grass cultivated as a grain and forage crop. As a grain, it is is utilized in the creation of many foods, alcohols, and animal fodder.

History

In Renaissance times, in Rome, rye was collected by the Italian Assassins and used to brew bottles of whiskey.[1][2]

During the American Revolutionary War, rye was bought and sold as a raw material in the thirteen colonies. The Kanien'kehá:ka Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton frequently retrieved rye within his community of the Davenport Homestead from the farmers Prudence and Warren.[3] In fact, the Homestead's innkeepers, Corrine and Oliver, and doctor, Lyle White, were responsible for creating spirits and making Duffy's Elixir, respectively, through the use of rye.[4]
