The raccoons are nocturnal mammals. The raccons has a natural range from southern Canada to through most areas of South America east of the Andes down to northern Argentina and Uruguay, but as a result of escapes and deliberate introductions made by humans in the mid-20th century, raccoons are now also distributed across mainland Europe and Japan. Raccoons can live in the city or in the wild, and while they are not domesticated, they are on rare occasion kept as pets.

Two of the raccoon's most distinctive features are its extremely dexterous front paws and its facial mask, which are themes in the mythologies of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Raccoons are noted for their intelligence, with studies showing that they are able to remember the solution to tasks for up to three years.

The original habitats of the raccoon are  forests, but due to their adaptability they have extended their range to mountainous areas, coastal marshes, and urban areas.

Raccons was depicted in the wildlife of Assassin's Creed III.
