Sun god Ra, the mightiest god of ancient Egypt, creator and destroyer supreme.

Ra was the god of the sun, the Duat (underworld) and also thought to be creator of man as a whole. He was known to have merged with other gods such as Amun, Atum, Horus, among others. Ra was considered to be most iconic solar deity that ever existed in all of ancient Egypt.

Appearance

In one of his many forms, Ra, god of the sun, has the head of a falcon and the sun-disk inside a cobra resting on his head. Ra was often associated with falcons or hawks during his "reign."

Rivalries

Ptah - Followers of Ra were known to be jealous of Ptah. While some believed that Ra is self-created, others believed that Ptah created him.

Isis - Isis frequently schemed against Ra, as she wanted her son Horus to have the power.

Apep - also called Apophis, was the god of chaos and Ra's greatest enemy. He was said to lie just below the horizon line, trying to devour Ra as Ra descended into the underworld. As he swallowed Ra, this led to the setting of the sun and when he had completely swallowed Ra this led to nighttime. He never succeeded in completely swallowing Ra however as he eventually spits Ra back out, causing the sun to rise.

Eye of Ra

It is a being in ancient Egyptian mythology that functions as a feminine counterpart to the sun god Ra and a violent force that subdues his enemies.

Trivia

  • There were weapons created as tributes to Ra, including the Eye of Ra (Heavy Blunt) and the Bow of Ra (Light Bow).
  • The Eye of Horus which consist of an eye inside of what appears to be a falcon is often mistaken for the eye of Ra, since both gods are strongly associated with each other within the mythology.
  • The character of the Son of Ra was a criminal acting in and around Dyonisyas. He named himself after Ra, probably due to "mystic" reasons.
