Quatford was the capital of Shropshire during the 9th century. In 873, it hosted peace talks between the Kingdom of Mercia, the de jure controller of the shire, and the Kingdom of Gwynedd, who claimed the county as their own. Through the efforts of Ivarr Ragnarsson to instigate conflict, the peace negotiations fell apart and the region was plunged into conflict. Immediately following the failed parlay, a small skirmish occurred just outside the Quatford city limits.[1] After the war concluded with the death of Rhodri the Great, the city fell back under the sole jurisdiction of Mercia, with Bishop Deorlaf becoming the county's Ealdorman.[2]
