Porus
Porus (died between 326 and 315 BCE) was an Indian king who ruled territories in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent.
In 326 BCE, Porus fought against Alexander the Great near the Hydaspes River during the Makedonian king's attempt to expand his empire. Despite possessing numerical advantage in addition to war elephants in his army, Porus was defeated by Alexander's superior cavalry.[1][2]
Following his defeat, Alexander, supposedly impressed with the Indian king's military flair and spirit, allowed Porus to retain his kingdom, which became a satrap of Alexander's empire. Porus remained an ally and surbodinate of Alexander until his assassination between 321 and 315 BCE by Eudemus, one of Alexander's generals.[1]
